Physical Disabilities Action Forum (PDAF)

  • Do you have an access issue?
  • Are your rights being abused?
  • Do you feel a part of the community?
  • Are you a lone voice asking for help?
  • Do you need someone to help you to be heard?

Then perhaps PDAF is the group for you....

PDRC established a standing subcommittee known as the Physical Disabilities Action Forum for people with disabilities who are interested in working together to achieve community awareness of their needs and raise issues and concerns that affect them.

Becoming a member of this forum gives people with disabilities the opportunity to act as their own spokesperson, to raise issues or concerns that directly affect them, and to work together with others to improve the quality of their life.

This group is supported and resourced by the Management Committee of PDRC. Training opportunities and guest speakers are also organised.

You are invited to join our group - please contact us during office hours or by email.

Projects "On The Go"

  • Upgrading of Penrith Train Station. For well over 2 years now we have continued to lobby the State Government for an accessible train station in Penrith. Money was allocated for the upgrading in 1998. Work has begun and should be finished by April 2000. We are continuing to monitor the development to ensure that the Access Standards are adhered to.
  • Updating the Nepean Access Guide. We are continually monitoring and updating information on access within the Nepean CBD. We were successful in obtaining funding to put this Access Guide onto the Internet. Part of this funding includes Internet and computer training people with physical disabilities to maintain and update this Guide.
  • We have appropriate information displays at local Disability Expos and local Shopping Centres.
  • Monitoring Access to Penrith Hoyts Cinema Complex. When the Hoyts Cinema Complex in Penrith was opened April 1998 there was no direct out of hours access for people with mobility limitations. This became a major issue for PDRC. After intense lobbying and negotiations with the developers (Lend Lease) a compromise was reached and the cinema complex is now open for all until the last show.
  • Lobby for a local Accessible Transport Strategy. We have been instrumental in lobbying local government to begin to look at the issue of accessible public transport in the local area. PDRC will be working along with the council and local bus companies to identify infrastructure problems in the area and develop an accessible transport strategy for Penrith.
  • Mobility Maps for Penrith / St. Marys CBD. We assisted Penrith Council with the compilation of information required to produce mobility maps for the Penrith and St. Marys CBD's. This process has involved extensive "community education" resulting in increased disability awareness.
  • Improved Access to Panthers Football Stadium.... After having identified access problems associated with Penrith Football Stadium, Panthers have asked for our input into the upgrading of the stadium. We have also consulted with Panthers on parking issues, which have been addressed.
  • New entry into the St George Bank in High Street Penrith......
